Bring Back Art!

Journal Entry: Sun Jun 3, 2007, 4:10 AM
Bring Back Art

Ever wondered where the art went to around here?

What ever happened to all those people who would flock to your prints account and purchase tons of stuff because they liked your art? What happened to all those constructive comments we used to give, where we'd actually help the artist, rather than just tell them their piece is "1337"? What happened to the good morals of commenting before you :+fav: favourite?

The good news is the deviantART community still has these ethics infused in our members somewhere. The challenge now is to bring them back.

Bring back the ART to deviantART.

We (=kle0012 and =kittysyellowjacket) created with this purpose in mind. We miss the good old days of dA, and with your help, and community support, we want to bring back the reason deviantART was created. ART!

News:
5th July, 2007
Let's get the party started, with some new CSS action.

We got a DD on our guide! A bit of a late reaction I know, but we have been lurking around here, contrary to how it looks. A big thanks, from the bottom of my heart, to Kitty, for putting in heaps of work to get through a lot of the work. <3

More coming soon. I hope you have your competition socks on.

I belive that commenting is good. But somtimes,(this is hard, especially for people like me),it's really hard to think of somthing to type...so in a way,**somtimes**a fave IS a lot better.Although I also very strongly feel this website is going downhill because of certain users. And even a few words can show how much you love some one's submitted art...but if you are going to put a few words,I think people should make it sensible. Not just stuff like
"OMMGGGGGGZZZ!!!ITS SO AWESOMEEEE!!!=3" or "I love it!".For me,I'm neutral on the faves or comment. But I believe we should bring back deviantART!It's not a deviantSPACE! And one last thing...(I hope you are not offended by this)but...I support fan art(The good ones anyways)!
I'm going to support this site too!=)

Is it even sensible to join if nothing is going on? and theme weeks being theme months..

I got to mention too that I like the stamps. and that for one of the first times I regret not being a subscriber so I could use them.

Nope, we're around and we haven't gone downhill. We just made this club to open people's eyes so they can take matters into their own hands.

I can agree on that you should comment and give constructive critisism... but "Bring back art"? Isn't everything art? and if it's good or not is up to the viewer.

Anyway; I'm joining the club ^_^ I like your idea and the theme-weeks seemes fun ^^

Why? What makes it art? I fail to see how your sister making a face and you snapping the shutter button, producing a blurred, off-center picture with exactly zero effort invested in it, is art. Just because it matches a category doesn't mean it's art withint that category.

hmm A photo of your sister making a funny face would go under Photography, People & Portraits, Spontaneous Portraits. Sounds like art to me

Mmm, I think you misunderstand. I never purported to be the one to judge who is talented and who isn't. But I think all of us should be critical, and that's what I'm being. Like I said, I don't mind what level someone is at, but I do mind when people use this site as an excuse for posting their personal blogs or posting "goofy" or "funny" photos. That's what MySpace is for. A piece may be perfect, it may have some imperfectionsn it might be seriously flawed, or it might be downright bad, but what matters is that the person who made it wanted to make something good. I don't mind someone not having the necessary technical baggage, as long as they can take criticism. I do mind people just posting inane drivel and calling it "art" when they have clearly invested no effort whatsoever in it.

I know I can't see the intention with which someone makes art from here, but some things are obviously junk that belongs on MySpace. A photo of your sister making a funny face is good for LiveJournal or MySpace, but keep it off an art site. If you have a photo of your sister that has impact, or that at least shows you have more than a passing inerest in photography, then I'll be satisfied. But not if you think you can just click the shutter button and pompously call it "art".

I’m sorry but your last comment just blew my mind! Who are you to judge who has “real” talent and who doesn’t?

Yes I know a person can look at a photo and point out certain types of unique qualities of the work such as lighting, editing skill, location, and subject. And use those observations to form their own opinion of the artiest skill level.

But no one, and I mean no one (no matter how important or “informed” you think you are) can stand there and say that this one artiest was sent by the gods, that no one will ever out do them. And anyone who tries is a fool for they have no talent and never will, that they should never pick up a camera or a pencil and try to take a picture or draw a dream. Even if they feel a dive to be creative, or express there natural free will.
For I am the sole owner of all seeing trueful eyes that can see only true talent, so whatever my opinion is on any armature artist, is the right one for ever and ever. No matter what they think I will always be right.

That my friend is an insane way of thinking, and unfortunately many people here agree to the above statement as being true applying it to themselves. Being an artist isn’t about having perfect crisp soft forced photos, or owning a four thousand dollar camera. But trying new things, learning from others, and most important showcasing how you view things around you. Key word being you, me, I, myself, whatever.

Sure some of her photos are a bit on the armature myspace portraits style but I hardly believe DAers telling her to"delete her account, because her contributions to this site is waste of server space, and ruining the "point" of dA." Or "that they're probably too stupid to see the difference between art and a MySpace photo." is constructive criticism but are cold, shallow, unneeded insults.

I try to think of it this way if I was a new DAer and my first comments where you have no talent! Go back to Myspace! You’re running the world with your simple plan photos. I’d probably block every one of those self absorbed comments and leave.
But the fact that she stays and still continues to post photos, (that really aren’t the worst I’ve seen on here) shows me that maybe she is trying work on her new found hobby, that maybe she does love photography and thought this would be a good place to showcase her work to fellow likeminded artist. Possible even getting some positive feedback from others who share her interest rather then the usable that’s hot statement you’d see on mysapce.

I find it very hypocritical when DAers who clam there policy is to uphold freedom of expression through art and diversity welcoming artists of all levels from amateur to professional are the first ones to pounce on any photographer who doesn’t have the lighting skills of Lara Jade , the production value of Old-York, or the high quality details of hellwoman is just a myspace poser who should go back where they came from.

The truth is there will never be a set definition on what art is as well a set definition on the words beauty, normal, love, or any obscure word designed to express the emotions of us humans. That’s just life; don’t make it so confusing or difficult. Stop persecuting those who chose not to be labeled, don’t try to put a person in a box just so you can have a better understanding of there work.
Just let them be, sure you can express your own desires for how you’d like there work to look, or what you feel is missing from your point of view.
But in the end the final decision on their work will always be up to the artist themselves. No one else, ever.

I couldn't disagree more. It's not snobbish to point out that someone has no talent and obviously hasn't practiced either. I'll be the last one to snub my nose at someone who genuinely wants to be a good artist, no matter how low his current skill level is, but I despise the current "everyone's an artist"-trend, where people show off their "art", presuming themselves to be deserving of recognition when all they've made are some stick figures or a stupid MySpace "holding the camera"-photo. Those people think they know it all, and encouragement or, heaven forbid, constructive criticism are only insults to their magnificent abilities in their eyes.

lol she’s not that bad, I think maybe if us “true” artist where less DA snobs and encourage people to take there style to the next level, maybe those myspace artist would just become real artist.

well maybe her art is just in a myspace photo type of style.
She could be the next Lara Jade or Prims.

Just so above every one else. :giggle:
